The Mariners medical clinic was established in Vancouver in 1977. The clinic was situated in 736 Granville St., which was a building full of medical professionals at the time.
The BC chamber of shipping was not satisfied with the medical facilities available to visiting crew members in the port of Vancouver and approached Dr. L A Patterson and requested that he establish the Mariners Medical Clinic.Dr. Patterson, from all accounts, was an occupational health physician with an interesting background, a great intellect and talent. Apparently, he was a retired colonel from the Canadian Armed Forces and an ex-logger.
Dr. AJ Trudell an occupational health physician, trained in Québec with an interest in travel and geography, joined Dr. Patterson in 1978 and Dr. Brian Troffe, an engineer and occupational health physician, joined the two of them in 1979. At that time they had 10 occupational health clients, mainly logging companies plus the sick Mariners.
In 1980 the Montréal Mariners medical clinic arrived in Vancouver and Purchased the Mariners medical clinic. Dr. Pattison. Dr.Troffe and Dr. Trudell continued to work in the clinic and care for the sailors.
In 1983 the shipping industry went through a difficult period and cut costs. The Montréal sick Mariners clinic ended up selling the clinic to a Dr. J Kerrins, a psychiatrist from Dublin. Dr. Karrins operated the clinic for 1 year and ended up selling it to Dr. AJ Trudell. Dr. Troffe started his own occupational health practice in suite 408 in the medical building on 1160 Broad Street.
In 1986, Dr. AJ Trudell moved the clinic and joined his friend Dr. Brian Troffe in 1160 Burrard St, due to the fact that he was sending all of his referrals to St. Paul’s hospital and the specialists, pharmacy and other health related services in the neighborhood. Dr. Trudell and his wife, Anne ran the clinic out of suite 401 – 1160 Burrard Street until 1996 when Dr. AJ Trudell and Anne retired.
The clinic was then purchased by Dr. Stan Karon who was moving to Vancouver from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan the time.
Dr. Karon has run the clinic Since 1996. In 2006, Dr. Karon purchased the occupational health practice from Dr. Brian Troffe–things had come full circle.
In 2011 Dr. Sam Krauss joined as an associate and in 2012 Dr. Damon Ramsey joined as a part-time Associate.
